assignment nine:

Some or all of this assignment will be done in class today (monday 10 feb.).  You will work by yourself, but you can consult with others if you cite them in your acknowledgements. The are two parts to this assignment. The first part is, essentially, set-up or preliminary to the second part and will be completed in class.

Part 1: In the chapter we read for today's class, Mitchell examines and explains various aspects of digital images and digital image procesing. We will work through the chapter using Photoshop to more closely examine the medium of digital images as described by Mitchell. Fetch an image off of the web and, in Photoshop, perform the following on it:

  1. Start with a high resolution image and degrade the resolution. Degrade it three times so that it looks very pixelated, akin to the most pixelated image on page 61.
  2. Find an image, or a create an image that contains noise in it due to compression or decompression of the image.
  3. Go to mapquest.com. Find directions from your neighborhood to school. In Photoshop, past together a series of maps that show each step of the way from your neighborhood to school.
  4. With any image you like, explore the menu items under "image >> mode." Look at the image in CMYK, RGB, and other channels. Try saving the image in different formats (e.g., JPG, GIF, and TIFF). What happens? What's different about these images?
  5. With any image you like, explore the menu items under "image >> adjust." What happens when you adjust the color balances, or the brightness? What happens when you invert the image? Try the other items on the menu too.
  6. Under "edit >> color settings" have a look at the information concerning a given image.
  7. Explore the different items under the "filter" menu.
  8. With "Shift+Ctrl+N" you can open a new layer. Try setting the layers opacity to different values and add another image or some text onto the image in the previous layer.
  9. Try rotating an image to different angles.

Part 2:For this part of the assignment (due on Wednesday) you will create a collage of at least ten images that you find using the google image search service. To find this service, go to www.google.com and then click on "images." For every image you find, record (1) the url of google search that found you the image; and (2) the position in the google search page of the image. Thus, if the image came up first in the search, write "1". If it was the tenth image in the search, write "10", etc. Collage the images together using Photoshop. Feel free to try different things out and explore, but when you decide how the image will be added into the collage, write down each step in Photoshop that you did (i.e., the sequence of menu items and/or values you typed in). The idea is to record a step-by-step trace of your work so that given the trace, someone else should be able to recreate the final collage.
